The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland

Audition Applications

FAQs

Many of your questions will be answered in our Conditions of Membership section, but here are some other things you need to know.

How and when do I apply?

Applications open in August each year and auditions take place in October. You can apply for an audition online by visiting the Auditions section of our website.

How much do the courses cost?

Generally, the annual fee will be €750, divided into manageable installments.

We charge course fees at approximately €50 per day, this can be subject to change depending on the funding we receive each year. Your €50 covers accommodation, meals and all transport (apart from buses on the first day – see below). All musical costs are subsidised.

Thanks to the generosity of NYOI Friends, we can offer financial support to those families who need it.

Where are rehearsals and how do I get there?

Unlike many other youth orchestras, NYOI does not rehearse on a weekly or monthly basis. Residential courses are currently held twice annually at Kilkenny College, Kilkenny. Residential courses are always during school holidays. The first course (7 days long) is in late December/early January and the second (10/11 days long) is in July. On the first day we offer buses from Cork and Dublin however you must pay separately for these.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

No. All bed linens are provided at the residential venue. You do need to bring your own towel.

What standard do I need to be?

NYOI do not specify a standard that you must be to apply. So if you can make a good attempt at the orchestral exceprts we provide, we would love to hear you! The excerpts are available a a link at the bottom of the "Joining in" page. If playing in an orchestra is new to you, you might consider joining an orchestra in your locality first, although this is not a requirement. Check out www.iayo.ie to find a regional youth orchestra near you.

If we haven’t answered your question please contact us and we will be happy to help.
